AIR-DRYING BOILIES - Posted: by Richworth
Air-drying is a great way of preserving your bait. This method can be used on freezer baits and boilies made using base mixes.
When air-drying frozen boilies you must make sure they thaw out in their bag completely first. There are two reasons for this, one is that they will dehydrate and the other is that the ice in the bag contains additives and nutrients that are re-absorbed during the thawing process.
The best way of air-drying baits is to use a drying tray which are available from most tackle shops with instructions, but alternatively you can dry them on a towel in a warm, dry place, (an airing cupboard) or in a pillow case and hang it up. It is important to remember that the boilies must be shaken/moved about during the drying process otherwise mould could form. Never put too many boilies in at a time when drying to allow adequate air flow around the bait.

ALEXEI BYGRAVES’ DUMBELL TIP
Richworth produce a number of different ready-made dumbell boilie pellets to complement their range of baits. I have been using little dumbell hookbaits this year, but making them up myself using the complex base mix, with half the recommended dosage of the complementary liquid. Using small dumbell hookbaits is different to the predictable round boilie approach, and can be effective on lakes that are heavily pressured. Whether you roll them up yourself, or buy them ready rolled, they’re defi nitely worth experimenting with.
1. One egg is cracked into a bowl.
2. Half the recommended dosage (for one egg) of complex liquid is added.
3. Add a teaspoon of egg albumen.
4. Mix it up with a fork and slowly start adding the complementary base mix.
5. Keep adding the base mix until the consistency is right (doesn’t feel too sticky).
6. Either roll the baits to the desired shape by hand, or use a bait gun and a rolling table. If using a rolling table then make the cylinders a lower diameter than recommended. For example I have been using a 10mm table with 6mm
sausage from the bait gun, making neat little 10mm by 6mm barrels.
7. Once the baits are rolled I boil them for a minute and a half, and leave them to dry before putting them in the freezer.
FIELDTESTER’S TIP
Open up a bag of freezer baits and treat them to a coating of Spray-On-Flavour. As the baits begin to thaw out the flavour will be drawn right into the heart of the bait, enhancing the bait further. This is a good ploy for single hookbait presentations or baits that are being presented in a PVA bag. Steve Renyard
Don’t always presume that a big carp requires a big bait. There are several different sizes and flavours in the freezer bait range, giving you the option to try something different. Don’t forget that it is always worth carrying matching pop-ups. Martin Clarke
Try alternating fruit and fish flavoured readymade boilies when fishing busy waters. For example, use a Tutti Frutti hookbait over Crab & Mussel freebies.

DIPS & GLUGS
One of the best ways to induce a bite on those days when little seems to be happening is to use some sort of bait dip or glug. The basic idea behind a product of this type is to increase the attraction in the vicinity of your hookbait without having to add much in the way of other free offerings. Therefore, when a carp moves into the area to investigate the smell of food, the only bait he’s likely to find will be the one on the hook.
Richworth’s Impact dips are excellent for taking with you on the bank to use as and when needed. For best results leave your hookbaits soaking for between 1 to 2 hours, but if you’re pushed for time even ten minutes will give your hookbaits a real boost in attraction that can really make the difference in cold water conditions where you need something ‘extra’ to pull in a few fish. Being oil based, the Impact Dips will leak attraction up through the water too and are excellent for attracting carp cruising mid water.
One of the other liquids I use for dips is the matching liquid additives that are available for baits such as the Multiplex, Ultraplex and the new K-G-1. For instance, although the K-G-1 liquid is designed to go into the matching base mix, I’ve found it has many others uses too, with one of the best being a long term soak for hookbaits. Small tubs of bait can be prepared and stored in the fridge, and give a different type of boosted hookbait than the Impact Dips will. Both will have their day on the right water: I favour the baits used with the Impact Dip for winter and on any well stocked venue where bright baits work well, and the liquid additive soaked baits for use on big fish waters where baits such as the Multplex and K-G-1 would usually score well.
